There are things you can do to help prevent type 2 diabetes.
Being aware of risk factors, such as increased weight or a family history of type 2
diabetes is important. Encourage active play, physical activity and healthy eating.
For children who are at risk for or overweight according to the body mass index for
age growth charts, here are some helpful tips and changes to try:
- Speak with your child's health care professional for his/her recommendations and to see if further testing is needed.
- Limit time for television and video games to less than 2 hours a day.
- Encourage your child to participate in a fun physical activity for at least 60 minutes every day.
- Make physical activity part of your regular family routine.
- Encourage your child to drink less regular soda, sports drinks and juice and instead, to drink more water.
- Limit fast foods for the entire family.
- Incorporate more non-starchy green vegetables into your family’s meal plan.
- Avoid eating while watching television.
- Be aware of appropriate portion sizes for children, or consult a registered dietitian for assistance.
- Contact your child's health care professional for information and referral to a weight management program, such as SHAPEDOWN©, designed specifically for children.
